Dollhouse Unveiled

Hopefully, you have enjoyed following the progress of the dollhouse made out of an old entertainment center. In case you are visiting my blog for the first time and want to see how the various pieces of the house were made, feel free to click on the embedded links that I have provided within the key words and it will take you to that specific blog entry in a new window.  Happy Reading!

After seeing some amazing Entertaiment Center Upcycles on Pinterest via Better After Blog, I was inspired to try my own upcycle.  Hard to believe how quickly the time has passed with this project.  I feel like I have been busy nearly every night.  A little over 8 weeks ago, an outdated oak entertainment center sat parked in my garage waiting to be revitalized.

It took some time to build the roof and make the perfect shingles.  My finds at Michaels in the wood working section were the perfect fit for the peak.  I had difficulty chosing my colors but after finding some perfectly sized storage containers at Target the color pallet began to take shape.

After a couple of coats of boysenberry, this 1980's beast of oak turned into a real beauty.  All of those blogs about what a coat of paint could do for a tired piece of furniture weren't lying.  I painted an outdoor scene on the sliding wood panels.  I utlized an old keyboard drawer for a slide out yard that doubles as a front living room when the doors are open.

I began to tackle the "great room"... the kitchen, dining, family room combo space.  I am too excited to share the nearly finished dollhouse to have the kitchen all the way done.  I'll update this when I finally finish the kitchen sink, stove and fridge that I have planned (so stay tuned).  The kitchen furniture, drapes, art, table and couch really came together with the color scheme.  I have lived a little vicariously through this dollhouse and have enjoyed putting together fun color combos that would be awesome to have in a home.

I am so happy with the way the bedroom turned out.  I was a little disappointed at first about the sizing of this space.  It would have been great if the side console area was 20-24" instead of 19".  The prison beds have been a fun joke and their size has grown on me.  Apparently, Molly's Parker doesn't mind the size either.  I have enjoyed my pinterest inspired projects such as the bedroom valance.  The bedroom, living room and loft lights have been a great addition to the dollhouse and make the kiddos feel like it is a real-working house!

The bathroom was one of the most challenging rooms.  Funny enough it was easily furnished with an Our Generation tub set from Target.  I found making the bathroom sink frustrating and a test of patience.  The rug was another Pinterest inspired project that turned out so cute that I may break out some t-shirts and make a larger version for a room.

After completing the bathroom, I set my eyes on finishing the loft.  I repurposed some old shirts into pillows and a bean bag.  I used a pattern by Liberty Jane to make a couch.  I created an ottoman from the remaining scrap shirt material and it acts as a third potential sitting place for when friends of Julie and Molly visit.  The hanging light is battery operated and changes colors.    The walls were once again "Pinterified" with a Pinterest-Pinned inspiration.

The end result is two happy little girls with a cute playhouse for their miniature best friends and an entertainment center that has once again found itself the center of attention.

Thinking about tackling a project like this?  I would love to hear about it and see your final outcome.  Please leave a link in the comment's section and I'll be sure to view it and link to it!

As you begin to search for your perfect entertainment center... look on freecycle, craigslist and your local goodwill store.  Be sure to measure the various spaces.  Ideally, you would want an entertainment center that is 20-24" deep.  This baby is 16" of which only allows for furniture that the dolls will lay on to go in one direction along the back wall.  Once again, the bedroom and bathroom area is only 19" wide so it created a little bit of a squeeze - in an ideal world that side console would be 20-24" wide.
